Claims of the “surge is working” the Iraqi occupation continues at one point dominated our mainstream news media and the claim may be true now that the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is encouraging U.S. troop withdrawal. These days the media doesn’t see these new developments to be relevant. What’s really dominating the war front though is the Iran-Israeli-U.S. conflict. Bombs are being tested in Iran, the Israeli’s are playing war games and Congress is working it’s black magic ever so quietly to get more blockades on the Persian country. The heat seems to be on U.S. government to intervene using military force and Israel is getting the go-ahead nod from the administration to just give us the time and place and we’ll be waiting with bomber jets.
However as all these news stories hardly compare to the bloodbath happening in Afghanistan. Last month Afghanistan seen more U.S. troop deaths than in Iraq, yet this was hardly plastered all over the television screens like that of which you’d expect from an unbiased informative media. Today Afghan militants, who not two decades prior we helped overthrow the Soviets by supplying weapons and money, attacked an American base and killed nine U.S. soldiers and last month they broke over one thousand people out of an Afghan prison. Lest we forget all the civilian casualties this war has imposed on the people of Afghanistan.
Instead of talking about the issues that mean most to Americans, issues that effect our every day life and informing us what our government is doing, we have pundits talking about Phil Graham opening his big mouth. Hardly a productive discussion. It seems we are caught in the soundbyte of the day type news discourse, one that only dumbs us on the issues and will never bring to light any debate on issues that really matter. If that debate is brought up and you disagree with the administration you are a “terrorist apeaser”, “unpatriotic”, a “liberal”, along with a whole litany of absurd accusations.
The reason we must not forget Afghanistan is because there are still men and women dying over there that should not have to. The Bush administration has failed in capturing bin Laden. In fact the administration seems to have no interest in bin Laden and have shown that they only continue to strengthen Al-Quieda rather than weaken them. We have not been greated as liberators in any country we have invaded since World War II and it’s time we stop acting like we have been. I say it’s best we just leave soon, like… now.
