Drug War Watch.

  • Congress is set to pass a bill which will celebrate the 75th year after passing the 21st amendment which repealed prohibition.  From the article: ‘The ban, though, “resulted in a dramatic increase in illegal activity, including unsafe black market alcohol production, organized crime, and noncompliance with alcohol laws.”‘  I’m sure not one of the congressmen or woman notice the irony.
  • The Federal government, superseding state laws, gives police chiefs incentives to catch more drug felons. “According to federal statistics, the share going to Alabama law enforcement agencies went from $1.8 million in 2000 to $8.5 million in 2007. Nationally, state and local agencies collected $416 million in 2007, up from $212 million in 2000.”
  • Police raid a D.C. Police Captain in the middle of a birthday party.  “”They just came in and started hitting people,” said the 23-year-old woman who hosted the party. She did not want to be identified.”  They found nothing.
  • Suspected drug dealers were informed that they were going to be raided.  Seven out of the eleven turned themselves in.
  • In Washington State police are finding thousands of marijuana plants in vineyards.
  • Even though marijuana is more and more becoming a cure all for various conditions the government is still arresting people in record numbers.  872, 721 marijuana violations that lead to arrest in 2007 alone, that’s one cannabis user every 37 seconds… and how many of those were violent?  Considering 89% of them were for possession alone I would venture the number is close to zero.
